Background and experience

Many years in publishing has given me the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects.

I have been a freelance editor and writer for many years and focus on lifestyle books, with two main lines of expertise: cookery and health and wellbeing. In all cases, I work mainly in non-fiction, on consumer-based books that inform, entertain and get the job done.

I have worked on both sides of the editorial desk, having started my career in London with Macmillan Education and moving on to Oxford University Press, through Rodale Press, Purnell Books and finally to Foulsham Publishing where, as Editorial Director, I looked after an expanding list of lifestyle books. As a freelancer, I have worked for many major publishers from Watkins and BBC Books to Macdonald, Little Brown and Hardie Grant.

Cookery

Cookery is my specialist subject and I have recently written the professional guidelines for Editing recipes and cookbooks for the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

I have worked on many modest cookbooks; plenty by new authors – like Laura Lamont and Uyen Luu; even more by professional food writers – including Nicola Graimes and Carolyn Humphries; and many more by celebrity chefs – including Ken Hom, Gary Rhodes, Madhur Jaffrey, Valentina Harris, Nisha Katona, Marcus Bean, John Gregory-Smith, BOSH! and Daniel Galmiche.

With most books now needing the measurement quantities to open up a global market, I can expand the sales potential of your book at the same time as ensuring it matches the high standards set for modern cookery books.

Health

From patient-focused health books to alternative therapy and general wellbeing, I can combine the essential down-to-earth explanation with the ability to comprehend what the reader needs to know.

Lifestyle and crafts

A category that could include pretty much anything, I have worked on books on weddings and funerals, parties and mental health issues, painting, knitting, dough modelling and popular philosophy.

'Turning my life-work into a product was not a simple one for me, and Wendy was always there, overseeing the editing process calmly and effectively, managing the professionals involved and making sure standards did not slip. The result is a book we can all be proud of and that thousands of parents are finding useful.’

'Your recent patient information is outstanding and it fills a gap I’ve been all too aware of my entire consultant life.'
