Grammar tips

Good grammar helps you make your message clear and your writing pleasant to read.

English is a wonderfully subtle and varied language that has drawn inspiration and absorbed words and phrases from all kinds of other languages, from French and Spanish to Japanese and Latin.

While this makes it flexible and imaginative, it also means it can have a habit of tripping you up because the rules have become complicated and irregular in the process. For every rule, there is almost always an exception.

Very few people either want or need to study grammar
in depth, but it is important in making sure your writing
is pleasant to read and that you
communicate your
message clearly.

These notes focus only on the areas that most frequently trip us up. They are neither erudite nor purist. They are simply designed as easy ways to help you improve your writing skills.

So to avoid grammatical, or any other kind of indigestion, remember

Don't eat, Grandma

but, whatever you do, please

Don't eat Grandma
